The Youth Group, comprised of middle and high school students, meets on select Sundays at 10 a.m. for friendship, fun, and reflection on life from a Christian faith perspective. The youth group joins the congregation in the sanctuary for Communion, then regroups following the service to reflect and, occasionally, to prepare for events happening later that day.
On the first Sunday of the month the youth attend the entire worship service to deepen their experience of spiritual practices at St. James, and are invited to participate in the liturgy as readers, acolytes, and musicians.
Service and Fun
Young people at St. James also find meaningful encounters with the world around them through service. On the second Sunday of the month, they help prepare and serve a meal to the homeless at St. Martin de Porres. In June, youth group members participate in a week-long mission trip to our diocesan retreat center, the Bishop's Ranch. They work together on a hands-on project to enhance the Ranch's ministry – from putting in a garden to building a retaining wall, while sharing times of worship and recreation as well.
Youth group members are encouraged to engage in service and leadership at all levels of the Church's life, from helping plan worship to serving on the vestry. They are full participants in the life of the St. James community.
Throughout the year, our youth plan and participate in many other events – large and small, service-oriented or just for fun. But the heart of their experience in the St. James Youth Group is the friendships and relationships they build with each other and the mutual support they provide each other in times of need. Above all, the group creates a safe space where they can be themselves.
St. James offers a Confirmation class for middle school aged youth every other year. This is a nine session series that meets on the 2nd Sunday evening of each month, September through May, culminating with Confirmation at Grace Cathedral in June. This is a significant commitment and important experience of Christian formation for youth, whether or not participants ultimately decide to be confirmed.
