From: The Reverend Mary Moore GainesRector, St. James Episcopal Church To: You! Dear Newcomer, Welcome to St. James Church, Preschool and Community Learning Center. The Mission Statement of St. James Church is "to bring an ever increasing number of people into an ever closer relationship with Jesus Christ so that God's love may be a transforming force for the communities in which we live." The poet Rilke askes us to learn to live the questions. Many of us were raised with the strong message that asking questions about religion, theology, about Jesus and God was not okay. Our elders were understandably nervous about our questions, because they thought they had to have the answers. Fear was behind the message that we had better "get it right" or we were in deep trouble. Many of us were taught that this so-called "loving" God really only loves Christians. This didn't sound like unconditional love. We believe God loves all people unconditionally. We believe that Jesus Christ is a simple and a profound way to God. A unique way. Our way. Not the only way. Our life together is grounded in the Holy Eucharist, the Holy Scriptures and in open, inclusive, honest, safe and graceful community, gathered around the sacred and reaching out in love and service. We celebrate the diversity of our congregation, a multi-cultural community, diverse in age, experience and socio-economic background. We are a progressive parish, question-askers, seekers, risk-takers, committed to growth, healing, learning and service. St. James is blessed with active lay leadership. The people are the ministers, involved in every aspect of church life. We believe communities like St. James are the best hope for a just and peaceful world. Please contact me and/or our other clergy, lay or staff people with your questions and comments. We look forward to hearing from and welcoming you. All blessings, |
